End-of-Summer Maintenance: 5 Things to Check Before Fall

Summer may not be over yet, but fall is coming. Before temperatures drop and the seasons change, take a few minutes to make sure your facility is ready.

Here are five items that should be on your end-of-summer maintenance action list:

1. Inspect Roofs & Drainage

Clear roof drains, gutters, and downspouts of leaves and debris. Check the roof, flashing, and penetrations for damage or areas that may allow water to enter during fall rains.

2. Get Your HVAC Systems Ready

Complete your seasonal heating-system PMs before you need the heat. Replace filters, inspect belts and controls, and address any deficiencies while there is still time to make repairs.

3. Inspect Exterior Doors & Hardware

Check exterior doors, closers, locks, weatherstripping, and thresholds. Make sure doors operate properly and seal against the elements before colder weather arrives.

4. Inspect & Service Fireplaces and Chimneys

If your facility has fireplaces or chimneys, now is the time to have them inspected and cleaned. Don’t wait until the first cold evening to discover that your fireplace isn’t ready for use.

5. Check Exterior Lighting

The days are getting shorter. Walk the property after dark and inspect parking lots, walkways, entrances, and building exteriors. Replace burned-out lamps and address damaged fixtures before they become a safety issue.

The goal isn’t simply to prepare for winter. It’s to identify problems while there is still time to correct them.

A good end-of-summer inspection can prevent avoidable maintenance problems once fall weather arrives.
